Bespoke Jewellery South Africa: Lorna and Stephen Olckers love how every piece of jewellery tells their unique personal story

Designing jewellery for unique personalities is what Scarab Jewellery Studio does best – it’s at the very heart of our brand ethos. Lorna and Stephen enjoys the creativity of Janine Davidson and how she interprets their essence into every piece. Here’s what Lorna had to say:

“Many years ago, back in 1995 when Scarab was a mere pup, I became friends with Elmi and, through her, the fabulously talented Janine Davidson. I have so many memories of not only a wonderful friendship, but also of a jewellery collection that too has many stories to share. My first pair of Scarab earrings were a birthday present from Janine and Elmi; they were purple stones set in silver stars on a round backing (terrible description, but you get the picture). I still have them and
they are worn regularly despite my ever-growing collection of Scarab jewels.
Every Scarab piece I have has a special story. However, my favourite is probably the one when Stephen and my 30th wedding anniversary was approaching – a pearl celebration. I had spotted the woven bracelet of tiny pearls and made it abundantly clear that I fancied that piece of jewellery for our anniversary. Stephen got the message but, to our combined horror, Janine announced that Scarab was no longer making this beauty as they had experienced problems with it. Stephen was in a
panic. We’re talking about a woman obsessed (a Leo woman) being denied her prize. But Janine had done all of this for my benefit. Taking years off Stephen’s life, she had managed to fool us both.
Happily, she filled Stephen in, boxed my beautiful gift and made me the happiest recipient of my stunning pearl bracelet.
Scarab has seen our family through so many special occasions: anniversaries, our son Matthew’s engagement and wedding to Simone, birthdays and more. I remember our daughter, Sarah, announcing at a very young age that when she grows up she would wear only Scarab jewellery. She now has a spectacular collection of earrings and personalised gifts, including a brooch designed by Janine in the shape of the symbol for Pi in honour of her birthday, her love of maths and her nickname. My mother too had her collection of Scarab beauties that have now been passed on to me and Sarah.
I think what makes Scarab so very special is Janine’s personal touch. She thinks carefully about what will bring the most joy, what will be most meaningful and what will look best; and it is all done with such love; small wonder then that Scarab has such a devoted following.
