An early purchase of mine from Scarab was a Mandarin garnet set in gold with a silver band. It was a work of art, the colours complimenting each other, eye catching on Joanna’s slender olive fingers. A treasured 21st gift. It was a heart sore loss the day that ring came off in the ocean when Joey’s fingers got cold and slimmer in the crisp sea waters near Albany.
My silver Scarab on a leather thong was so admired by close friend Sharon that she got one for her 50th too. Beetle mania began in Zimbabwe.
The denim and silver earrings I bought the day I met Janine are almost part of me, I sleep in them they are so comfortable. Trace had to have a pair too, just for being my sister from the other mister, so earring twins we are. Young Abby from Zambia marvelled at them one day so next birthday a wee Scarab package was presented to her by Ives, her mum in law.
Beautiful light shining gems were secured in carefully crafted Scarab rings observing the births of my grandsons. An intoxicating clear green Tourmaline stone was set in gold for Laura, celebrating the day that Darcy was born and a golden Citrine, the colour of lion’s eyes is worn by Sam celebrating the day Beauden was born.
Janine is so trusted, in design and with secrets. She was one of the few that knew when Tom was proposing and so another ring was designed and clandestinely collected in Cape Town. Janine also fashioned a gorgeous clasp for a string of pearls worn by Georgia, making them stronger and more secure.
The list goes on with Scarab magic, turning old jewelry into exciting new pieces.
Visiting Scarab is a must for me when in Cape Town. One to see Janine and second to see what beautiful creations have been made. Joanna’s birthday was in March and having not seen her for almost three years due to Covid and Australian regulations, our getting together was a joyous and colourful meeting. These Victorian styled earrings marking that occasion were a real win, a gathering of different stones, set together in valued earth alloys. I think they are exquisite.
