Travelling with Jewellery

Our top 3 tips for taking your jewellery with you on holiday

Most of us hibernate over the winter months and mull over our summer holiday plans. We spend hours in front of our laptops to find the winner deals on weekends away and seaside sojourns. The internet is full of wonderful ideas on where to holiday, what to buy and which items to pack. But there are very few tips on which pieces of jewellery to take along and how to keep them safe and sparkly. Here’s our top 3 tips for travelling with jewellery:

1. Choose the “Travel Friendly” pieces

When choosing your holiday wardrobe, always consider the type of jewellery that best suits your destination. How active are you going to be? Are you planning on learning how to waterski or paraglide? We realise that the lack of adornment could have you feeling a little underdressed, but it’s far better than losing your prized bling forever. Earrings that clip into hooks are great to travel with. They are super comfortable for sleeping and are safe bets for daring holiday activities. The pearls that go with everything? Definitely.

2. Sunbathe sans sparklers

Be very careful when slapping on your sunblock. The cream tends to coat gemstones, which reduces refractive and reflective light. Essentially, this means your stones won’t shine so brightly. Sunscreen also makes your fingers greasy and rings can fall off unnoticed. If you’re heading out into the waves for a swim, it’s best to go bare (of jewellery, not your bathing suit!) as your fingers shrink in cold water and your rings may slip off your finger. If you have worn jewellery in the sea, rinse your items thoroughly. Don’t forget that pearls are particularly sensitive to chlorine and salt water. We suggest that you rather leave your fine pieces locked away at your hotel or guesthouse if you’re heading to the beach or the pool for the day.

3. Keep it safe

Always keep your jewellery on your person when in transit. Never put jewellery into your baggage that is to be checked in and will travel in the hold of the aircraft. When selecting a hotel, be sure that safe deposit boxes are available. Never leave fine jewellery unattended in a hotel room, a rental car or on a lounge chair, even if you’re just popping across to the bar for a mojito.

The less jewellery you take on holiday, the less you will have to worry about. Holidays are for having fun. After all, you want to be able to enjoy yourself, free of unnecessary responsibilities. Travelling with jewellery doesn’t have to be a worry – by editing your wardrobe and using our logical top 3 tips, you’ll have plenty of fun and have bling for those all-important selfies!
