Scarab Jewellery Launches in London

How did the decision to open Scarab Jewellery London come about?

Leading up to the launch of Scarab Jewellery London, we briefly revisit the connections that made the dream possible. According to Jacky Boy, a South African who calls London home, the connection with Janine Davidson of Scarab was forged over many years and happy coincidences – like meeting up for sundowners in Hong Kong after a hard day shopping for gems, or briefly bumping into one another at a party. The social connection was strengthened over time, and as so often happens in the world of business, the idea to collaborate, “perhaps, one day in the future”, was raised several times. The seed was sown. Why now? Well, building on the seed analogy, the seed suddenly sprouted. Why not now? Why wait? Scarab already has die-hard long-time customers living in the UK, Jacky lives in London, and she knows the world of jewellery… the stars were aligned.

When will Scarab Jewellery London open?

Sunday 29 November 2015. Janine Davidson arrives in the British capital from Cape Town before the weekend to assist Jacky with the official launch. The Studio in Cape Town has been quite busy finishing up a small stockpile of beautiful Scarab pieces especially for the launch. Launch attendees are going to be in for a treat! There is no high street shop yet, so customers will will have to contact Jacky Boy directly (see details below).

What can a South African jewellery brand teach London?

When writing this blog post, I rang Jacky up to get the inside scoop – here’s what she had to say about the Scarab Jewellery brand and why she thought it would be a great success:

“I think that a South African brand in this market is poised for success, particularly when considering how big brand jewellery is made for the high street  today. If I look at some of the pieces available today, I can see economically motivated practices such as hollowed out metals, thinner gauges… to make jewellery more acceptably affordable. Compared to Janine’s Scarab pieces, I like the fact that I can feel the weightiness of solid precious metals. There’s no skimping on gold or silver. This is a true artisanal brand – not mass produced. No, you can actually see these pieces are hand-crafted, hand-finished with a level of skill and craftsmanship that is rare to find anywhere nowadays. They are made to last. I suppose that economically too, the manufacturing process in South Africa allows for an extremely unusual opportunity for Londoners, anyone in the world, to own pieces like this at very reasonable prices – compared to anything they can purchase locally made at the same level of old-world craftsmanship. The fact that they are beautifully designed modern pieces made with old-fashioned weightiness is the reason Scarab will succeed here. Plus, I’m South African, so there’s that obvious connection.”

How would you sum up Scarab Jewellery in one sentence?

“Unusually designed, interesting, creative pieces made lovingly by artisans with care – it’s how they used to make jewellery.”
